At My Father’s House, we walk alongside men who are stepping into a hard-won freedom, often for the first time in years. The shift from incarceration to independence is monumental, but also disorienting. With so many choices, it’s easy to lose sight of the deeper question: What do I do with my life now?

That’s where we come in. Not to lead, but to accompany. Not unlike a Gandalf figure, we show up not with all the answers, but with presence, perspective, and belief in the journey. Because addiction recovery, like any epic quest, is confusing and lonely at times. The stakes are high. And the map is never quite clear.

This past week, we brought our men to the Colorado Symphony to experience The Fellowship of the Ring. The music, the story, the beauty of it all gave us more than a night out. It gave us language.

They saw themselves in Frodo: handed something heavy, something others couldn’t quite understand. The Ring, like addiction, isolates. But through the Fellowship, we’re reminded that support is real, even when the burden is ours alone to carry.

We talked afterward about beauty and goodness, and about the power of having a “Sam” by your side. Because sometimes, someone else’s belief in you is the only thing that keeps you moving. Still, as Gandalf reminds Frodo: All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

That line landed. The room was full of quiet nods.

We’re honored to be part of this journey with so many brave men. It’s not easy. But on the road to healing, moments like this, shared beauty, honest conversation, real fellowship, are how we keep going.
